This is another newsletter in what is hoped to become a regular quarterly feature to inform members of what is going on at the club.
200-year Celebrations
The club was established in 1826 as can be seen on the plaque and logo at the main lobby. No precise date is known, and extensive searches have been conducted to try and pinpoint the exact day of the Malta Union Club inception.
A sub-committee has been setup to formulate ideas for this momentous event. We do not want only this sub-committee to come up with ideas but would urge the members to get involved with ideas which they can make in person at our offices or through emails. Obviously with a heavy member presence on the actual day of the celebration.
Website and Facebook
We are in the process of updating our website with current information. We will at a later stage re-vamp the website itself to become more attractive.
Also, a first for the club is that we are going to have a Facebook page. It is the understanding of the committee that in today’s age, it is extremely important to have a social media exposure and the information current.
The committee is hoping that this exposure will attract new members of the younger generation
Tennis Courts
The tennis courts have been given a huge facelift with the playing area in blue with the surrounding outfield in green. The club was going to finance both courts itself however it was able to attract two sponsors. We must thank Altenar Software Limited as being the major sponsor, and the other being Malta Tennis Federation.
Members register
We are starting to acquaint ourselves with the new system that we purchased to modernise the upkeep and interaction with the members. The new system should be up and running from 1 January 2025.
At a later stage this year, we will issue detailed instructions on how the system works. The members will have a lot of autonomy in the system, but those who are unsure can always call at the office for any help.
Telephone system
In September as well, we are going to install a new telephone system. As members you will not notice any change but internally, we should be more efficient and being new we should have less malfunctions.
Lifts
The replacement of the current lifts is well in progress. Barring any last minute surprises we should have one of the new lifts working by the end of September 2024 with the second one starting and finishing in October 2024.
We continue to ask the members patience while the works are progressing.
Garage Doors
The garage doors are fully operational now for entry and exit from the club. These are going to be left open during the day to save on the wear and tear, but they will be closing in the evenings especially during the winter months. Don’t forget that you will still have to use their garage entry cards at the barriers.
The club is closed when the shutter is down.
Please remember that if the doors are closed, this does not mean that the club is closed as well. The doors open and close with the pressure of the car on the pads.
Please keep in mind that the doors open inwards so when exiting the garage, we ask members to stay a safe distance away so that they will not hit their car.
Upgrade
We have now started the upgrade of the second floor with the installation of blinds and curtains.
We are now turning our attention to the offices.
Tigne Beach
Tigne beach is proving to be an extremely successful venture even when compared to last year. There were teething problems which, with a bit of goodwill on both sides, the caterer and the beach club committee, have been largely ironed out. There are, I am sure, further improvements that can be made so that next year the beach will be even better than this summer.
Car Wash
We have introduced a car wash service. Fees are €10 for exterior wash only and €15 for both interior and exterior wash. The car wash service will be on -2 level. Please notify reception should you wish your car washed to be able to coordinate the schedule.
New Members
Thirty new members have been accepted since the last newsletter in June 2024.
Although summer is coming to a close the Committee of Management wishes all our members a happy and enjoyable one.
