Last month, the annual Malta Open took place at the Marsa Sports Club and as of Sunday 15th October, a new Malta Open champion was crowned in Liam Delicata, one of our own members at the Malta Union Club. Moreover, together with his uncle and vice-chairman, Marcus Delicata, they claimed the doubles title, making it a double victory for Liam.
Quite a bit of history was made after last week’s results as it was the first Malta Open title for Liam Delicata, who is following in the footsteps of his grandfather Eddie Delicata, also a member of the Malta Union Club.
Eddie Delicata, a legend of the sport who won the inaugural Malta Open back in 1967 and who went on to win over 20 singles titles, along with men’s doubles and mixed doubles titles. Furthermore, the doubles title won by Marcus and Liam is the first uncle and nephew victory in Maltese history, which coincides with another record held by the Delicatas, whereby the title was won by the first father and son duo (Eddie and Daryl Delicata) in 1983.
A great achievement by our members and players which bodes well for the future of tennis at our club.
